Happy Weekend! I hope you are enjoying yourselves. The Grewell's have a busy day ahead of them. We have church, then the Joliet Volunteer Fireman's Bingo Lunch, and then the Globetrotters! What a fun family day!!! (All in the midst of taking care of baby calves!-This one got to come in and warm up by the wood stove. It's mama wouldn't lick/clean it off so Bob the cow dog got the job done for it. Then...back out to mama for some fresh milk. All is good now!) Don't worry Carl...I got some video of all the little calves for ya. We are up to 40 now! Only around a 100 to go! :0)
Last week we ended it in a fun way with the help of Miss Claire being star of the week. Her dad brought in Lily, her puppy dog! She was so friendly and everyone that wanted one got a lick in the face or a wag of the tail. I love how Lily and Claire have the exact same color of hair. Cool! Claire also showed us some of her forever growing rock collection that she adds to each year when her family travels to South Dakota. Also, who knew that Claire LOVES hamsters??? All of us! We all know she loves, loves, loves those little guys. We got to see pictures of two of them. Cookie sure does look like an Oreo! Thanks for sharing with us Claire!
On Friday, we also took time to share our Mall of Americas. Impressive! It was fun to join in groups and listen to the kids explain their stores in their malls. No one was surprised to see that Reece had added a movie theater that allowed you to just cuddle up with a puppy dog and watch a movie. That kid is going to be a vet for sure one day!!! Love it Reece!
A couple of kids added a trampoline store. The entire store is trampolines that kids can just play on. We DEFINITELY need one of those in Billings/Silesia!! Fun, fun, fun! Come to find out it is a real store! Cool!
Each child took turns sharing their mall with a small group. Then we laid them out on our desks and did a gallery walk. I am in the process of grading them. My only instructions for them were the same ones I posted on the blog the other day. They had to have 5 real stores, 4 places to eat, and two fair rides. They could make up the last store. It had to be illustrated by hand or printed off a computer. Each store had to be labeled. High EQ had to be shown. (It had to look as if effort was put in and that they worked on it for two nights). Grades will be posted by Tuesday so kids can see them when they log on to check their grades.
TESTING begins this week. We will take the MONTCas Science test on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday morning. There are three sessions. Each one is about an hour. We have been doing some practice ones in class whole group to just review some basics. This is not a test you can study for, it is just a test that shows what kids have already picked up thus far in school. Science is all about logic and applying what you know to new events. I have been reminding kids to not think each question to death and to just eliminate the ones that they know are not true and then logically narrow the two left down to the correct one. I KNOW they are all going to do great...IF...they do their very, very best. Please make sure kiddos are here on those days. We all know by now, that make up testing is not my favorite thing to do, and I BELIEVE kids do their best when in their natural setting with their peers. Sick...stay home. :0)
We have finished up our unit on space in Lead 21. This week, kids will do some essay writing about all they have learned. We will compare and contrast two astronomers and explain how their astronomer bettered the world of science.
We will also be doing some writing using our Bridge to Terabithia books that are due tomorrow. Please remind kids to bring those in tomorrow! The report will be done in class. If not finished, it will come home for added homework.
In math, we will continue our journey into Geometry world. We took a look at angles and geometric terms last week. This week, we will move into polygons and all that comes with that. Think Lions, and tigers, and bear...oh my...except it will be triangles, quadrilaterals, and pentagons oh my!
Our first unit in MT History is complete. We will now move into the actual history of Montana. We will start with life in Montana (which is not Montana) in the 1700's. We will look deep into the lives of American Indians and their way of life. Then the 1800s come along and so does the horse and gun. Indian life changes drastically when these two items are brought into their world by Europeans. Everything changes from their hunting styles to trade to fighting/protecting their own. That will lead us right into Lewis and Clark and Westward Expansion or as some people call it the Eastern Invasion. I teach both views.
Spelling this week is pattern words. Each word has a vowel, consonant, consonant, vowel pattern. We will take the time to find these in each word. Spelling tests are on Friday as always.
Well, I sure hope you have a wonderful, wonderful week!
Mrs. Grewell
