Don't You Quit!

Hello there.

Sorry for the late blog. The internet was down at school at the end of the day.

Homework tonight is to write a Dear Mrs. Grewell letter. I am hoping that they include their plan as to how they are going to finish up strong before going to the 5th grade. :0)

We had a BLAST today testing out our egg restraining devises. They sure had some interesting engineering designs. I took pictures and video. I will post them in a slideshow tomorrow.

In Fly Time we talked about perseverance and not ever giving up. We tried to imagine a world that we would be perfect every time we tried something. It would be pretty boring!!! Mistakes are fun! When we don't give up, we learn what to do the next time. I shared one of my all time favorite poems with he kiddos today. If you watch this, write QUIT in the planner for $50 tomorrow.

frame width="420" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/VkCFeNeqyHk" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen>

Tuesday folders came home today. There was a lot of information for parents. Please look through it carefully. There is also the permission slip for the upcoming field trip to Plenty Coup State Park with our friends over at Washington Elementary. Please sign and return tomorrow. There is no real money cost for this as Indian Education For All picked up the tab for us! Wow!!! (That is over $200 donation!) Kids will need a sack lunch that day. Kids that return it tomorrow will earn $50. Thanks. There is a $200 fake money buy in as well. Most kiddos have already done this. Ask yours...

Have a great, great night!

It Is Good To Be Back!

Hello, hello, hello!

It is good to be back. I woke up on Friday and felt great. So...I went to school and surprised the kids! I was greeted with big hugs and happy "Mrs. Grewell...we missed you!" Warmed my heart. I took it easy, and we had a great day together.

The quarter ends on Tuesday. All missing work is due tomorrow. Please check online to make your sure your kiddo has everything turned in. I also printed a missing work report for kids that have it. It is on their desk waiting for them.

Kids will also be greeted with a new wallet and $200 start up money tomorrow. Kids spent all their money buying into the upcoming April field trip to Plenty Coup State Park and buying coupons. We now have blue money. Those that were absent will buy their coupons tomorrow, but past that old money will no longer be accepted.

Quarter 4 means we are in the homestretch. Expectations won't get any higher than they are this quarter. It is time to pull out all the stops and push, push, push one last time. Kids will show just how much they have grown in the 4th grade on the upcoming MONTCas Smarter Balanced testing and the MAP NWEA tests in April and May. I can't wait to see the results. Whoohoooo!

Fines have also been raised from $50 to $100. Kids should not have any reason to not know our classroom expectations now. They also need to be ready for the 5th grade classrooms. Missing work, talking out in class, forgetting things at home, not having planners signed, and just all around behaving in class should be easy as pie these days. Those that are still having issues with these skills will be fined heavily to help drive it home one more time. It is imperative that kids earn their money and keep it as we have some upcoming field trips this quarter that will require buy ins. Positive choices...no issues buying in! Negative choices...might have to stay behind. BELIEVE!

Report cards come home not this week, but next week.

Don't forget this week is a short week. Kids have a half day on Thursday, off Friday, and off the following Monday. Enjoy your Easter Break.

Academically...
Math: We will try to finish up our geometry unit and take the final test.

Reading/Lead 21: We will finish up our Unit 5 reading and skill work and begin our inquiry projects.

Spelling: We will begin our new program. We will test tomorrow without studying. Kids that miss two or less, will be done for the week. Those that don't will need to study and will take the same test again on Thursday. These are 20 words that 4th graders use every day. Many of them are homophones. We will continue skill work as well.

Language: Pronouns.

Science: We are ready to test out our cars and their restraining devices on a raw egg in PLTW. Kids have designed ideas and will test them out. Then, they will go back and decide if they were successful or need a bit of tweaking before trying again. After trying it twice, we will take the cars apart and begin to build the next devise.

MT History: Native Americans in the 1820s. We will see what happens when the gun and horse are introduced by early Europeans. Hint...it changes everything!

SS-We will begin our tour of the SW region. The states and capitals test will be not this Friday, but next Friday. There are only 4 states in this region: Texas, New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Arizona.

Fly Time: We will take a look at this cause and effect sequence: struggles-perseverance-character-hope. There are reasons we struggle, and that is to build ourselves up. We will take a look at how we can be compared to a lump of coal. coal-pressure-heat-diamond!

Miss. Emily was our star of the week last week. She brought in her sweet puppy dog and a ton of stuffed animals. So precious! Emily sure loves her animals...real and stuffed! Thanks for sharing with us Emily!

I was so sad to miss the science fair. I was able to slide down their this weekend and check out all the creativity done. Wow!!!! I could not believe all the different boards and projects in there. I was able to grade all the boards that I could find. I am super proud of all those that did a board this year! I also gave each child extra credit by changing their lowest science grade to a 100% as promised. Great job to all kids. If you were at the Billings Clinic Science Fair on Friday or Saturday, please write FAIR in the planner for $100. (Your child did not have to do a project for you to go!)

Happy Birthday to Miss. Hanna. Thank you so much for the yum, yum, yummy donuts! She made a killing right before buying coupons! Sweet time to have a birthday! Hanna also got a pretty cool birthday present this weekend. Check this out! Whoa! Pretty grown up their Hanna!

Reece we sure hope you had a great time skiing. We missed you on Friday. Sure glad you were not up at Red Lodge when the wind and fires hit! I am hoping no one was. Wow!!! Pretty smokey in our neck of the woods!

Have a wonderful week!

One More Sub Day.

Hi!

I hope all the kids had a great day. I sure do miss them. I also hope the Science Fair was super fun!

My procedure went very well. However, the doctor has ordered me home again tomorrow and the weekend to rest and relax. This is the last thing I want, but I am going to follow the doctors orders. So, there will be a sub one more day tomorrow. Thank you so much for all the texts last night and this morning. You have no idea how amazing your support is and what it means to me. This chapter is now closed and I am excited to finally be back to the old Mrs. Grewell again come Monday.

There was no homework assigned tonight. Enjoy the night off.

Have a wonderful weekend.

Sub Again Tomorrow.

Hello there.

I am hoping all went well today at school. Homework tonight is to finish up their scholastic news. They have a map skills page and the back page.

The doctor's appointment didn't go that well for me. I will be gone again tomorrow. I got answers, but now they want to do a procedure tomorrow. I will be back to work on Friday. Please know that I absolutely hate not being there each and everyday and I try so, so hard to not miss school. This just can't be avoided.

I am so sad that I will be missing the science fair tomorrow. I am glad however that I will see them all at the Expo Center this weekend. Kids need to bring in their boards and props tomorrow morning before 8 to the gym. They will set them up then. All day, parents, staff, and students will be going through the gym to check them out. We will be there at 2. Then, at dismissal, the boards and supplies must go back home. Kids will eat lunch with Mrs. Moore again on Friday to talk Expo details. These are the same details as you got in your email. She just wants to make sure everyone is on the same page for Friday.

Have a wonderful night. I know baseball, soccer, and many other activities have started up. Please have kiddos bring in game schedules when they get them. I would love to come watch when I can.

Sub Tomorrow

Hi there.

We did a ton today.

In Fly Time, we checked on our grades and made goals for the week. Everyone has something to work on. We can all get better all the time...even me. :0) This Friday, is the coupon buy in. Kids also bought in for the upcoming field trip to Plenty Coup State Park in April. I didn't want them to spend all their money and then not be able to buy in. Now, they will need to spend all their leftover money as we will start over again for 4th quarter next Monday. There will be a few more field trips at the end of the year, so it will be imperative that they save their cash and not spend it foolishly, like talking out, having missing assignments, or goofing around. Fines also will increase from the standard $50 to $100. Those that make positive choices will not have ANY problem earning all the cash they need and then some.

The Science Fair is THURSDAY at Arrowhead and FRIDAY at the Blgs. Clinic. Kids need to bring in everything Thursday morning before school to the gym and set it up. Parents are welcome anytime that day to view the projects. Our class will be going down at 2 to view. Please see your email from the clinic for details about Friday. Kids must be there while being judged that night. Questions...please email Mrs. Moore at moores@billingsschools.org. She is in charge of it all here. Thanks!

Last week, Miss. Morgan was star of the week. We got to meet her very special, furry friend Ruby. What a laid back kitty! Morgan also loves Minecraft, having Nerf Wars, building legos, and snuggling with her very special teddybear that her grandma gave to her before passing. Sweet, sweet stuff. Thanks for sharing with us Morgan! You are one amazing kiddos. AND... thanks mom for bringing in the kitty for us to enjoy!

This week we will complete our last unit in the spelling book for the year. We will then switch to a new program that deals with words that 4th graders use everyday in their world. Kids will be given the test on Mondays. There is NO list to study from. The test is a story with blanks in it. I will read the story and the kids fill in the words as I go. Many of the words are homophones such as there, their, and they're and to, two, and too. I will then grade them and give them back on Tuesday with the corrected spellings. Kids that miss 2 or less will pass with a 100% and be done for the week. Those that miss more than two, will have all week to study off their sheets, and they will test again on Friday (same exact test). They will then earn the percent they earn. I will put the words on the blog on Tuesdays as well, but they need to know the context to use them in so I will make sure to put the graded one in the Tuesday folders each week for safe keeping. You will notice that the words tend to repeat from test to test. As I said, it tests words that 4th graders should know in their everyday writing over and over and over again. There will not be an alternate list anymore.

We started our new region in SS today...the South West. Hold onto your hats because this region only has 4 states!!! Heehaw!! Flashcards will come home later this week. The test will be during the second week of April. As I told kids today...this is the easiest test...easiest to pass AND easiest to fail due to the numbers being low. It is all in them studying. The location and the states and capitals will be tested.

I will be gone tomorrow. The kids will have a sub all day long. In short...my blood tests came back irregular. It is still showing that I am pregnant. I have tried many things, but now I need to go see a specialist. I have been dealing with this since November. It is really starting to take its toll so if you could keep Zach and I in your thoughts tomorrow that would be great. I will just be glad to have a solid plan rather than lets try this or that for once. No need to worry...I will be just fine. All I have to do is BELIEVE! :0)

Homework tonight is cursive/MLK Jr.'s famous quote. I will blog tomorrow, but it might be later. Thanks for allowing me to find sunshine in my day with each and everyone of your kids. I truly believe kids are healers and that their young, joyful spirits make every single day better! Love them!!! Tuesday folders are also due tomorrow.

Hi there.

Sorry for the late blog. I am literally just getting home from today's outside adventures. What a beautiful weekend.

We will have spelling this week, but not the following week.

The Science Fair is this Friday! I can't wait to see all the experiments.

Have a  wonderful, wonderful week!!!

It was a good day! A very good day!

Awesome! Thank you sooooooo much parents for lighting the fires under your kiddos. I received a TON of reading tub work today! The best part...it wasn't slop that was just done in a rush! It was also high quality work! I am so very proud of these kiddos! I will finish grading what was turned in today and update the gradebook. You can check online how your child's status is. Those that may need more than the 30 minutes tomorrow might want to come knock on the classroom window tomorrow instead of walking the circle to get a few more minutes to knock them out. Again, I am proud of all the hard work and support! You make my job that much more easier!

Homework tonight is to read Selection 3 in the leveled book. This book is designed to be on your child's reading level. They will all learn the same skills, but using text that is on their level. Please feel free to sit with them and listen to them read, read to them, or a mixture of both. Having discussions with parents always makes it more meaningful and easier to remember for a quiz (hint, hint). :0)

Spelling test tomorrow, along with having library class. Please remember those books to turn in.

In math today, we talked about regular vs. irregular polygons. Ask your kiddo to tell you the difference. If they can write POLYGON in the planner for $10 tomorrow. They should say...regular polygons have every side the same length. Irregular ones have different lengths of sides. Even if only one side is different, it is irregular.

I leave you with some fun pictures of our good friend Espen. He was star of the week last week, but is just now sharing. :0) Who knew he was into table tennis, soft air guns, and the military??? He is also beginning to play football so got one for his birthday! This kid just never ceases to amaze me! We are going to miss him terribly when he leaves for the year in April. He and his family study abroad for the 4th quarter each year in Norway. Very, very cool for him...very, very sad for us!

Have a great, great night. It is gorgeous out there!!!

Reading Tub Skill Work Due Friday!

Homework: Write a story (some kids need to do this) and write/create a thank you card for ABT performance of Junie B. Jones. They can just write it to ABT. 4th grade quality expected. The show was great!

Kids have been reminded that their reading tub skill work is due this Friday. They have had over three weeks to complete 16 skills now. They have had 15 minutes each day (at least) so that is over 4 hours in class. This week is it morning work all week so that is another hour and 15 minutes at least, and a 15 minute rotation so that is another hour and 15 minutes. So...I think we can all infer that there has been plenty of time given to do these 16 skills.  I met with each kiddo today. Some kids have three things done (many who could not explain why to me). On Friday, all missing skills will receive a failing grade. (This should be no surprise to them, and all of these are review of skills we have done in class.) Ask your kiddo how many they have left to do. If they can tell you write SKILL in the planner for $10. Thanks.

Have a great night!

Irish People Have the Best Holidays!

Happy St. Patrick's Day!!!! I loved all the green in here. I felt like I was on the Emerald Isle all day long! :0)

We had so much fun learning Irish style all day long. We started it off in Fly Time. We watched a short video about the history of St. Patrick's Day. Pretty interesting story actually! What color was the original St. Patrick's Day known for? It was NOT green! Ask your kiddos. Write their answer in the planner tomorrow for $10.

In Language Arts, we learned the art of writing a persuasive speech. Kids had to pretend that I was a leprechaun with a pot of gold. They had to convince me to give it to them. They used my weaknesses against me. They offered to buy me more BELIEVE signs and shirts to wear. Of course I couldn't say no to that one. I also had to save a few dying moms. Poor Noah B, Noah L, and Reece's moms. They were dying with deadly diseases and Reece's mom was abducted by aliens. The only way she could be saved was to teleport with the use of gold. Don't worry, I gave them all gold. You are now safe! :0) They sure were creative, and I helped a ton of homeless, hungry, and needy people and animals! Everyone was granted their gold!

That brought us to our buddy project. For some reason, kids were not able to see my shiny gold nuggets in my baggie. Mrs. Emerick, Mrs. Powell, and I were totally able to see it, but they all said all they saw was white powder. So, we tried to change it from a solid to a liquid to see if that would help. Sure enough, then they were all able to see the green and the gold nuggets just fine. (Thank goodness for Pistachio pudding!) Tricky Leprechauns! (If kids show you their gold...write GOLD in the planner for another $10.)

In math, we used a compass and a ruler to create our leprechaun faces. Kids had to use exact measurements to make all of the parts and draw the half circled hat with a 16 cm. diameter. Didn't they turn out awesome!!!! Who knew math could be so fun!!! All of them are on display in the hallway!

Homework tonight is a St. Patrick's Crossword puzzle. It covers all that we did in class today and the reading on the front page. Some kids went home with a Stanley Steamer cause and effect activity that they didn't quite finish in class too.

Tomorrow is our Junie B Jones field trip at the theater. We will eat lunch in the classroom (hot or packed) before we leave. We go at 11:50 and are back around 2. We will NOT have PE. I suggested to kids to dress to impress. We are representing our school and part of the theater experience is to dress up. Nothing too fancy (NO Espen...you don't need a tux!), but similar to what you would wear to church. NO electronics for the bus please. Thanks.

A quick message from Mrs. Meier...

SCIENCE FAIR ... Thursday, March 26 .... Parents may stop by the Arrowhead gym anytime from 8:00-3:00 to view the Science Fair Projects.

Thanks so much for having such awesome and amazing kids! They sure do all hold a special place in my heart! Hanna...I hope the leprechauns lift their tricky spell and you feel better tomorrow. :0)

May the Luck of the Irish Be With You Tomorrow!

Hi!

Welcome back AJ!!!! It was fun hearing about your trip to Mexico! It sure sounded like you had a great time surfing and swimming with the Dolphins. And...look what he found for me! It is sooooo awesome that they BELIEVE over there too! Thank you so much for thinking of me AJ. I for sure did not have one like this one yet! How lucky am I?

Homework tonight is a reading comprehension sheet on Mt. Rushmore. We studied it in SS on our Midwest tour. We also talked about it in MT History and looked at it from the American Indian point of view. Two different stories for sure! Kids need to read the sheet and answer the questions on the back.

We went over all the spelling words today. Kids had some time to google and google image them to discover how they are linked to the upcoming holiday tomorrow. We watched a video on the Blarney Stone. Ask your kiddo to describe/show to you how people kiss it. Not as easy as one would think. If they can show/tell you write BLARNEY in the planner for $10.

Kids that wear green tomorrow will earn $50.

Have a great, great night!

Luck is believing you're lucky. Tennessee Williams

Hello there. I am typing this out on my deck and the soft, warm breeze is heavenly. What a beautiful day! Can you believe that next weekend will be the last weekend of winter! I suppose the following one, the first one of spring, will be full of snow and below zero temperatures. :0) So, we best enjoy this one why we can. (Rumor has it snow is in the possible picture tomorrow morning!)

I got an email from the Science Expo saying that they emailed all of you the details for the upcoming science fair. Please check your emails that you wrote down on your application for details. Here is a link to the science expo website though if you need it. Epsen...yours was undeliverable, so I have it. Please write a current email in your planner so I can forward it to you. Thanks!
http://www.billingsclinic.com/scienceexpo/schedule-of-events/

It is St. Patrick's Day on Tuesday. Kids are encouraged to wear their green that day. We won't have a party, but we will do a fun science experiment with our buddies that day. :0) Did you do anything fun for St. Patty's Day this weekend? It was great fun to see Miss. Hanna in the parade on her scooter! If you did something "green" this weekend write PATTY in the planner for $10.

Academics continue on all week long...

Spelling: We are once again taking a break from the book skills. We will have a fun St. Patrick's Day list instead. So everyone is an alternate speller this week. The skill work will deal with these words all week.

Writing: We began our compare and contrast essays last week. We will finish them up early this week and then head to the computer lab to type them up. Next up, persuasive essays.

Language: Drops in the Bucket reviews continue. These help us review all the skills we have learned thus far.

Reading: We will continue on in our leveled readers learning about the Midwest area of the United States. We have been focussed in on finding cause and effect statements. The group discussions we are having are actually cracking me up. Kids are making a ton of connections to the text of all kinds. We are also making opinions backing them up with evidence from the text.

Math: Geometry continues. This week we will look at types of polygons, specific types of quadrilaterals, regular and irregular polygons, and solid figures.

Science: PLTW continues. I am hoping to finish up our first unit this week.

SS-Montana History continues with our Native American studies in the 17 and 1800s.

I submitted our book orders last week. They are on their way to Billings. Yay!

Miss. Emily used her show and tell coupon last week. She brought in her fun little puppy to share with us. His name is Bub! :0) Thanks for sharing with us Em. We sure can tell you love that little dog!

A Happy Birthday to Espen! I hope you had a great time celebrating. Thanks so much for the yummy, yummy donuts on Friday! Born on Pi day!!! That is 3.14 cool!!!! :0)

Some kiddos had their scholastic news left to finish up. Hopefully, those came home this weekend.

Have a great weekend!

Love My Job!

Hi there.

Another great day! Does anyone know why these kiddos' faces' look like this??? They look an awful lot like mischievous Leprechauns! :0) Hmmm....

PLTW resumed again today. Kiddos discovered how force makes cars go backward when colliding head on. They also discovered that when cars are higher, they move the other car way back. So forces can be equal or unbalanced. I didn't tell them this...they discovered it. Cool! That is exactly what PLTW is all about. Kids discovering by exploring. Tomorrow...we add weight.

In MT. History, we started our Montana People from 1700-1820. I asked them to close their eyes and then look what forms when I say the word Indian. As you know they brought that home the other night for homework. Here are a few that were shared with me. It is always interesting to see what they think of when they hear that word. Generally, after learning more their visuals change, especially when they meed a Crow Indian in today's world. (Which by the way does not wear skins, feathers, or headdresses. :0)) Today, we talked about how the dog was so important to these people. Ask your child to tell you what role the dog played. If they can and use the word travois at some point in that discussion, write TRAVOIS in the planner for $10.

Tomorrow is Friday. That means spelling tests and library books.

In Fly Time, I had the kids CRACKING up. Noah B and I sat in our desks and pretended to have a conversation. While talking I started doing some behaviors that I had seen the kids doing that week at the back table and on the carpet. I put my head down, stretched out on his desk (invading his space), looking under my desk, getting up and walking away, ignoring him and then asking him to repeat himself, rocking back on my chair, rocking forward on my chair, and interrupting him. I think I made my point. They look pretty silly when doing these things. We have also had a few kiddos falling out of chairs when getting in or out of them. So, I modeled how to move back my chair safely, stepping out, and then walking away after pushing in my chair. Then, I modeled how to return, pull my chair all the way out, walking into my space, sitting down, and then scooting in. Then, we practiced. Seems silly, but I didn't have one kiddo on the floor all day. :0)

Homework tonight is a math review page in their homework booklet. They need to complete the entire page.

Have a wonderful night.
Mrs. Grewell
